Artist Biography
Michael Stevens' mixed media and wood constructions lean towards the dark and ironic, reflecting the influences of his childhood, when he spent countless hours at the children's matinees and sitting in front of the television. The visual theater of characters from these sources —the movie and TV heroes, villains, and sidekicks—enhance Stevens' artistic dialogue and personal imagery.
Michael Stevens' work traces the human condition. In using the storytelling device Stevens' pushes the psychological differences between good & evil, guilty & innocent, serious & satirical. His sculptures also express dismay at America's loss of innocence since the 1950s, paralleling his own emergence as an artist and his continually evolving perceptions.
