Artist Biography

This exhibition embodies a return to the techniques and materials that Tom Bolles previously employed:
acrylic on canvas applied with a palette knife. It is an outgrowth of Bolles' recognition that he is best able to control
subtle color variations when painting the “old fashioned” way. This experience has proved to be very liberating. While
Bolles appreciates the opportunity to work without toxic materials, working again on canvas allows him to be more
direct.

It has been exactly twenty years since Tom Bolles had his first gallery show at the Soho Center for Visual Arts
in New York. Many of the works on canvas in this exhibition have never been shown before.

Despite the diversity of materials, from sheet metal and neon, to inkjet prints under resin mounted on
aluminum, to acrylic on canvas, there is a consistency of emphasis on color, luminosity and surface in all of the work.
